Juggling Life as a Mum in Business: My Journey and Top Tips

I didn’t have a fancy office, not even a kitchen table. Just a desk in the corner of our one-bedroom flat. It was carnage!
I couldn’t afford a business coach or expensive programs. So, I became my own mentor.
📚 I read blogs during night feeds.
🎧 I listened to podcasts while pushing the pram.
📝 I took notes on scraps of paper while CBeebies played in the background.
I Googled everything. I made mistakes. I learned. I kept going.
It was messy.
It was noisy.
And it was full of self-doubt.
But I made it work.
For my family.
For me.
Because mums in business? We’re made of tough stuff. We don’t wait for the perfect moment. We own it.
My Top Ten Tips for Juggling Life as a Mum in Business
1. Pick One Social Platform and Be Consistent
Don’t spread yourself too thin! Focus on one social channel where your target audience spends time. Regular, intentional posting beats trying to be everywhere. Authentic storytelling tends to outperform flashy but inconsistent content. Consistency builds trust and recognition.
2. Time Block Your Week
Use time-blocking to carve out dedicated work time and separate family time. Batch similar tasks (e.g., emails) to reduce switching costs. Use planners or colour-coded calendars to visualise and honour these blocks.
3. Prioritise Your “Big 3” Daily Tasks
Each evening or morning, identify your three most important tasks and focus on those first. This gives clarity and momentum without burning out. Let lesser tasks roll forward if needed.
4. Set Clear Boundaries and Then Respect Them
Decide when work ends (e.g., no emails past 6 pm, no screens during dinner). Communicate these hours to clients and family. Creating a physical space for “work mode” helps you switch off where possible.
5. Embrace a Life-First Business Mindset 🌱
Instead of feeling like you’re constantly juggling, shape your business around your life, not the other way around. This means building systems, routines, and offerings that flex with family rhythms—school runs, naps, or unexpected moments—without guilt.
6. Prioritise Good Sleep and Self-Care
Rest matters! Without it, you’ll burn out quickly. Even short self-care routines (a walk, a quick exercise session, or meditation) recharge your emotional tank. Leaders like Bumble’s founder struggle without it too.
7. Embrace Flexibility and Forgiveness
Kids are unpredictable. Life shifts. Be ready to adapt. And forgive yourself if things don’t go to plan. Mistakes are not failures; they’re recalibration points.
8. Define What Success Means to You
Don’t compare yourself to others. Decide what “successful” looks like in this season. Is it growth goals? School pickups every day? Or a mix? Align your priorities and let go of guilt when doing so.
9. Keep Your “Authenticity” Front and Centre
Being genuine in your messaging and business approach resonates more deeply than trying to mimic others or chase trends. Authentic content builds connection over time and isn’t draining.
10. Remember: Tomorrow is Another Day
Some days will be chaos. Others will flow. Accept that balance is a marathon, not a sprint. Celebrate small wins and move forward tomorrow when needed.
