“How do I actually start a business?”

Being a mum is a full-time job. And if you’re reading this, chances are you’re thinking: “I want to start a business… but where do I even begin?” I get it the thought of building a business can feel impossible.

But I promise it’s not. If I can do it so can you ! You can start your business from home, even with a young child, and do it in a way that fits your life not the other way around.

1. Start with Your Mindset

The first step is believing it’s possible. You don’t need a big office, a fancy website, or hours of uninterrupted time. What you do need is clarity and confidence in small, consistent steps. Think: small wins over perfect plans. Test, tweak, learn, repeat.

2. Take One Simple Step at a Time

Starting doesn’t have to be overwhelming. Here’s a bite-sized approach:

Step 1: Find your idea.

  • What do you love doing? What do people ask for help with?

  • Even tiny skills can become a business: baking, coaching, crafts, virtual services.

Step 2: Test it.

  • Tell a friend. Make a small sale. Offer a free trial.

  • Testing in tiny ways helps you learn without pressure.

Step 3: Set up the basics.

  • Social media page and/or simple website.

  • A way to accept payments.

  • A business bank account

  • That’s it for now you don’t need a full business infrastructure yet.

Step 4: Celebrate small wins.

  • Your first client. Your first £50. Your first positive feedback.

  • Every win counts. It’s proof you’re moving forward.

3. Work With Your Energy, Not Against It

Being a mum is exhausting, so your business should fit your life, not consume it.

  • Work in short bursts: nap times, school runs, bedtime.

  • Batch tasks: write a week’s social posts in one afternoon.

  • Protect your mental space: say no to anything that drains you unnecessarily.

4. You’re Not Alone

Starting can feel lonely, but it doesn’t have to be. Seek out communities of mums doing the same. Share your wins, your struggles, your ideas. When you see other mums taking small steps, it’s inspiring and it reminds you that if they can do it, so can you.

5. Your First Action Today

You don’t need to do everything at once. Start small:

  • Write down 3 business ideas that excite you.

  • Pick one and think of one tiny way to test it this week.

That’s it. One tiny action. One step closer to the business you want.

Remember: You don’t have to have it all figured out. You just have to start. And starting, even in tiny ways, is exactly how mums turn dreams into businesses right from home.
